2. TRANSITIONAL POSITIONS

2.1. SIDE-LYING ELBOW POSITION (Resting on One Elbow While Lying on One Side)

2.1.1. Side-lying elbow position

2.1.1. STATIC POSITION

The child, leaning on his forearm and elbow, lifts his trunk slightly from the surface and rests on part of his side. His head, shoulders, and chest no longer rest on the surface. Besides his forearm and elbow, the lower portion of his trunk and lower extremities (primarily the one nearest the surface) also maintain support. The angle between the trunk and the surface is less than 45 degrees.

The side-lying elbow position is the first phase of sitting up. The child reaches this stage at approximately the same time as he reaches the crawling-creeping stage.
